Rapidly Shifting Global and Regional Contexts
Global conditions are changing rapidly; whether we look from a political, economic, financial, social, or cultural perspective, large shifts are occurring.
What seemed unthinkable not long ago is becoming reality. A unipolar world turns multipolar, a rift forms between the West and much of the rest of the world, global systems increasingly seem unstable. And these are just some of many examples.
The pressure is rising, the world is in flux. Systems adapt, and shifts will increasingly be felt at global and local level. Whether we like it or not, we stand at a number of critical crossroads, with an largely unsustainable present, and an uncertain future.
A new global and regional grand chessboard is emerging. It is often challenging to see the full outline of the game as underlying conditions and dynamics, causes, effects, and interlinkages are often hidden, underreported or unknown.

Managing Uncertainty
The stability and predictability we have come to expect will become more elusive. Competition over resources and power struggles will become more important. Free flow and availability of goods and services is no longer a given.
While it is challenging to make precise predictions, the direction is clear, and the coming years will bring unprecedented challenges to societies, organisations, and individuals worldwide.
While this may sound alarming, in this larger game, one doesn’t need to be a passive pawn. It is possible for organisations to position themselves to be better able to deal with issues, anticipate, adapt to, and benefit from these challenges and associated opportunities.
That is where Resilience comes in…
Resilience and its importance
Modern organisations are part of large networks that operate in complex contexts. The proper functioning of these networks and operational contexts depend on availability of requirements and presence of acceptable operating conditions. Some examples are reliable access to affordable energy, organisational complexity, skills, trust, security, and effective supply systems and markets.
None of these are inherently stable or predictable anymore, and will likely become less so in the future.
This is why Resilience is important. Resilience is about surviving and thriving, despite organisations and their environment being exposed to disruption and stressors. A strategic approach to building resilience, empowering organisations and reclaiming control, will increasingly become important for companies and organisations to survive and thrive.
