In my capacity as strategic coordinator water & innovation at the Netherlands Red Cross I have had the pleasure of working directly with Erik Rottier on several assignments over a timespan of 5+ years. These assignments ranged from support to co-design programmes with strong community and institutional resilience elements to guiding us to develop innovative approaches, for example on how nature might protect people.

For every assignment, from start to finish, Erik has always shown a high level of dedication and professionalism. I have always been very impressed in his drive to deliver the agreed outcomes in a timely fashion and at the highest quality possible. Throughout these assignments, I have experienced first-hand how Erik commits to investing ample time to transform complex assignment into a clear work plan, making sure to engage with multiple internal- and external stakeholders and incorporating their expectations and requirements into the assignment.

Erik’s ability to deliver complex designs cutting across various technical domains, whilst making sure these are clearly communicated both on paper and verbally, is of high standard. I was particularly impressed by his skill to cleverly combine bespoke schematics/ diagrams with narratives, which is extremely helpful in making sure complex issues are more easily understood by his client.

In his drive to deliver upon the assignment, Erik has always shown a lot of drive and tenacity to work on various iterations until our and our partners’ expectations were met. Erik will not give up until he has delivered the desired results, whereby he has always proven flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile if the situation required.”

In my capacity as Head of Unit, Policy and Disaster Management and project lead for the Green Response Initiative at Swedish Red Cross, I have had the opportunity of working with Erik Rottier specifically on the Green Response Initiative. As the project embarked on the journey of defining boundaries and identifying cases from which to draw lessons, Erik provided insightful ideas and offered a first overview on what the file should cover.

Throughout the assignment, Erik timely provided updated versions of documentation and illustrations to purposefully instruct dissemination and communication material on the topic. I grew to appreciate Erik’s dedication to evolve within a topic and challenge mainstream approaches with new lines of thinking and innovative ideas. Erik does not shy away from difficult considerations, but rather takes them head-on and package results and thoughts in understandable formats to end-users.

“In my capacity as Programme Director Disaster Risk Reduction at CARE Nederland I have had the pleasure of working with Erik Rottier on multiple assignments over a timespan of 4 years. Erik’s tasks included coordinating policy and technical elements of the CARE DRR Programme for which CARE Nederland was the reference point in the global CARE International Confederation. His responsibilities covered inter alia the provision of both strategic and technical guidance, the capacity building of CARE and partner staff, the development of DRR-related resources, and the support of relevant research and projects in Europe and overseas.

Throughout his tenure Erik showed a high level of professionalism and commitment, taking on the most complex assignments with energy and creativity and an enormous drive to test new innovative approaches whilst adhering to the highest quality standards in the sector. Erik has acquired many skills over the years but without any doubt his greatest asset is his natural talent to turn extremely complex matters into easily understood flowcharts and action plans. This, combined with his perseverance, his strong communication skills, and his empathy and personal warmth, makes him an excellent trainer and facilitator, who is able to work with the most demanding audiences effectively and efficiently…”
